Just Like A Prayer
It’s funny to think back on the controversy Madonna stirred up with her video for Like A Prayer. Some just couldn’t get past its burning crosses.
Update: Just for comparison, how about Heart-Shaped Glasses (NSFW) by Marilyn Manson?
Update 2: Actually, I meant to include Personal Jesus (also NSFW).

Didn’t it mostly have to do with a black Jesus . . . and doesn’t Madonna kiss him, too?

Wikipedia says:
Pepsi had no idea about the controversial content depicted in the video; Madonna witnesses a murder, kisses a black saint, displays stigmata after cutting her palms on a knife, and dances in a field of burning crosses. Religious groups were furious and threatened to boycott Pepsi. They decided the risk was too great, and they cancelled their ad campaign and the sponsorship deal, although Madonna got to keep the $5 million in her contract.[3]
Wow, I don’t remember all that! And my 18 year old self thought he was supposed to be Jesus . . . not big on religious icons, then. Now it doesn’t seem very scandalous at all, does it?

Yeah, it doesn’t much compare to say Marilyn Manson. In fact, hold on a minute.

There. Now Madonna seems really tame.

Like A Prayer is a really good song on a really good album.
