Barack on the Secular State
For those who get tripped up on the idea of a secular state, Barack Obama gives a good definition. A secular state isn’t anti-religious. It is religiously neutral, allowing everyone to believe whatever their conscience dictates. It involves coming together on common ground to work together.
It’s good to hear a presidential candidate making this much sense.

The opposite of secularism is sectarianism.

I have tried to explain this concept to my extremely Mormon father. He just can’t process it. Of course, he also cannot process evolution, so he’s probably a lost cause. When I ran in the last Canadian federal election representing the Green Party, he actually didn’t vote for me, he voted Conservative.

I’m sure that made for awkward family relations.
Some day I’ll regale you with stores about the (continuing) argument between my father and my brothers about the definition of a circle. No joke.
