I am grateful …
… for the easy way my wife laughs.
… for time spent exploring the desert with my girls, finding sedimentary rocks, rabbit spore, and old golf balls.
… for cherished childhood memories that have grown iconic with age and forgetfulness.
… for windy, sunny days with titanic clouds full of dignity.
… that I am not alone.

It’s funny how television programs from childhood can embed themselves in the unconscious. I watch the 3-2-1 Contact intro and it’s as if the last 20 years never happened. I remember every snippet of the montage: the water drop, the kissed baby, the frog, the trampoline, everything.

Clean, hot-and-cold, running water
A functional, closed sewer system
Easy access to educational activities such as the local planetarium
Someone to take care of me when I’m sick
The chance to see another snowfall in my native desert valley like the one that fell when I was four.
